abstract = "This study evaluates the performance of three global algorithms:
OC4V4 and OC2v4 (for SeaWiFS sensor) and OC3 (for MODIS), for
chlorophyll-a estimative in the continental shelf off Santos (SP,
Brazil). In situ phytoplankton pigments concentration (chlorophyll
and carotenoids), colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM), and sea
surface reflectance were acquired in 49 stations in October 2005
and March 2006. Spectral reflectance measurements were averaged to
simulate the bands from the satellite sensors, SeaWiFS and MODIS,
allowing the assessment of global empirical algorithms. In situ
chlorophyll concentration and chlorophyll concentration from
algorithms were compared by regression analysis. The algorithms
                         showed good performance (R2=0.74 for OC4V4, R2=0.7573 for OC2v4
and R2= 0.7453 for OC3). The three algorithms underestimated
chlorophyll concentration between 0 and 2 mg m-3, but a strong
dependence of CDOM and carotenoids concentration was verified with
the errors of estimates for all algorithms. Seasonal differences
in the algorithms performances were also verified, related to
local and seasonal variation in the concentration of CDOM, and the
composition of phytoplankton communities Results indicate that a
modified algorithm to consider these seasonal variations and the
optical properties of CDOM and phytoplankton composition is
required for the waters of Santos continental shelf.",
